TAXPAYER DOLLARS AND SEX REASSIGNMENT SURGERY

September 19, 2012

To the Editor:

I agree with Elizabeth Warren, eliminating “I don't think” at the beginning of her statement that ended with, “it's a good use of taxpayer dollars” to fund sex reassignment surgery for an incarcerated murderer in Massachusetts. It’s not. (“Pandering in the Massachusetts Senate Race,” by Paul Schindler, Sep. 12-23).

I am not impressed if hundreds of psychiatrists say we should give operations to persons who want to change their gender. These are the same groups who said for decades that homosexuality was an illness. Psychiatry is well-intentioned for the most part, but not a science-based discipline. In making this statement, I am not pandering.
