Michael Sabatino Inaugurated in Yonkers

BY PAUL SCHINDLER | In January 1 inauguration ceremonies in Yonkers, Michael Sabatino, Jr., became the first openly LGBT officeholder in that city’s history.

With his husband Robert Voorhies standing beside him holding a Bible, Sabatino took the oath of office as Third District councilman on City Hall Plaza.

Michael J. Spano was inaugurated as the city’s 42nd mayor, and two other new councilmen were also 6

sworn in.

Running on the Democratic, Working Families, and Independence lines in November, Sabatino won 51.4 percent of the vote, surviving a last-minute anti-gay effort claiming he used a school anti-bullying program to recruit children to the gay “lifestyle.”

Sabatino and Voorhies have been longtime activists with Marriage Equality New York.
