The Houston Chronicle, that city’s daily newspaper, has endorsed out lesbian Annise Parker, the city controller, in her December 12 runoff against Gene Locke, the former city attorney. In the first round voting on November 3, Parker finished with 31 percent to 26 for Locke. In its endorsement, the Chronicle wrote, “In both her public and personal life, Parker has maintained high ethical standards and decorum in her years as an elected official. No scandals have occurred on her watch. As mayor she will present the city’s best face to the world, one of tolerance, diversity, and compassion for all our citizens.”

A recent poll conducted by Lake Research Partner showed Parker with a 47-34 lead among likely voters, while a KHUF TV poll put the race at a dead heat, with Parker’s three point lead within the margin of error.

KHOU TV reported on the efforts by Dave Wilson, something of a political gadfly in Houston, to derail Parker’s campaign by mailing flyers to 35,000 households, warning that “homosexual behavior leads to extinction.” In the flyer, Wilson claims, “I have nothing but compassion, respect and sensitivity towards those trapped in homosexual behavior,” but then asserting that “the promotion and demand for legal and political approval for homosexual behavior that will stifle religious freedom and trap millions of more people in its deadly grip.”

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a Washington-based group that works to elect out candidates to office nationwide, is supporting Parker and hoping to demonstrate the community’s muscle by routing LGBT contributions through its operation. The group has said 100 percent of the money collected will go directly to Parker’s campaign. Donations can be made at victoryfund.org/anniseparker.
